Critical Aspiration Beyond the Forum: Forum Mahasiswa Batch II

Surabaya, December 14, 2025Forum Mahasiswa (Forma) officially returned for its second batch as a constructive platform for students and lecturers to discuss academic issues and express aspirations aimed at improving the department and the overall learning environment. This activity reflects the commitment of the English Language Education Department to fostering open communication and collaborative problem-solving within the academic community.

The event was successfully conducted online via Zoom and attended by lecturers of the English Language Education Department along with students from the first, third, fifth, and seventh semesters. Despite being held virtually, the forum maintained an interactive and engaging atmosphere, allowing participants to actively share their perspectives and experiences.

The event began with an opening ceremony led by Baiq Siti Robiyatul Ahdawiyah as the Master of Ceremonies, who welcomed all participants with professionalism and warmth. The opening session continued with several meaningful speeches. The Chief of Forma, Arya Putra Nugraha, expressed his gratitude to all participants for their willingness to take part in the forum and emphasized the importance of students’ voices in academic development. This was followed by insightful remarks from the Chief of the Student Association of the English Language Education Department, Muhammad Muzakky Al-Himam, who highlighted the role of students as active contributors to positive change within the department.

The opening ceremony was further enriched by a speech from Rakhmawati, M.Pd., as the Head of the English Language Education Department, who welcomed the aspirations shared by students and reaffirmed the department’s commitment to continuous improvement. The ceremony concluded with a dua recitation led by H. Moh. Faizin, S.Ag., M.Pd.I., marking the official opening of the forum.

As the main session commenced, the moderator, Baiq Siti Robiyatul Ahdawiyah, outlined the rules and agenda of the forum. The session included direct disclosure of aspirations, online reading of written aspirations, and responses from lecturers. Representatives from each semester were given the opportunity to share their experiences, concerns, and expectations regarding the current academic environment and student life.

The discussion primarily focused on several key issues, including campus facilities such as the hall, classrooms, and other learning media; communication between lecturers and students; and the implementation of service learning programs. These topics generated thoughtful dialogue and highlighted areas that require further attention and improvement.

In addition to the open forum discussion, the committee had previously distributed a questionnaire to collect broader student input. The questionnaire addressed aspects such as departmental facilities and services, learning tools, challenges faced when using existing facilities, the learning system, and suggestions for future improvements. Arya Putra Nugraha then presented the results and analysis of the questionnaire to provide a clearer overview of students’ aspirations and concerns.

Following the presentation, the lecturers responded by offering explanations, clarifications, and constructive feedback regarding the issues raised. Appreciation was extended to H. Moh. Faizin, S.Ag., M.Pd.I., Rakhmawati, M.Pd., Fahmy Imaniar, M.Pd., Fathur Rohman, M.Ag., Dr. Siti Asmiyah, M.TESOL., Afida Safriani, M.A., Ph.D., and M. Hanafi, M.Ag., M.A., for their thoughtful responses, valuable insights, and clear solutions addressing students’ aspirations.

The event concluded with a documentation session and closing remarks by the Master of Ceremonies. Once again, Forma successfully served as a bridge for gathering opinions and aspirations, strengthening communication between students and lecturers, and encouraging collaborative solutions. Although conducted online, the forum did not diminish students’ enthusiasm to actively participate and engage in meaningful discussions. It is hoped that the outcomes of this forum will contribute to continuous improvements in the department and the university’s services for all members of the academic community.
