CULTURAL EXCHANGE 2025
The event began at 09.15 at the Student Central. In this place, the two guests from the University of Florida, USA, Devon Lewis Ely from Ohio and Joseph Shiwon Wilkinson from Alaska joined us. There were also other participants from other countries, such as students from the BIPA class (Bahasa Indonesia Penutur Asing), Hassan Saman from Somalia and Sadiq Mijinyawa from Nigeria. The event started with a gathering in the Language Centre, opened by the MC and followed by a speech from Ma’am Rizka Safriyani M,Pd., and Dr. Rindrah Kartiningsih S.S., M.Si, M, Pd, who accompanied the guests from Dr. Soetomo University.
The next agenda was mini games, where everyone had a chance to ask and answer the questions from the random card to others. Then continued with a presentation by Muhammad Farid Ubaidillah about introduced Indonesian Islamic culture. Then, Mr. Zulfikri Malik, S.Pd. gave a presentation about general Indonesian Culture thoroughly, from the traditional dance, traditional food, events, language, and even the gestures and routines when we communicate. The session continued with another mini games again, where everyone splits into two groups and guess the songs and the singers. Both the winning and losing groups received a prize. There's also a special prize for the lucky participants.
As everyone made their way to the fourth floor of FTK, the participants were warmly welcomed in the hall by the HIMA PBI committee, along with Ma’am Rakhmawati, M.Pd., and Mr. Moh. Faizin, M.Pd.I, who greeted them with friendly smiles and kind words. The MCs gave a welcoming speech as the event began. In the first session, there is a presentation led by Hajar Nur Kholily about introducing one of the traditional dances in Indonesia, “Tari Sigulempong”. Our international guests had a chance to learn and practice the movement of this dance. Afterward, participantd got the chance to explore some local traditional snacks—like wingko babat, wajik, roko-roko, getas, dadar gulung, and jamu. Not only did they learn about each item, but they also got to enjoy tasting them, thanks to the committee who had thoughtfully prepared everything. The session ended on a sweet note with the giving of souvenirs and a joyful group photo to capture the moment.
To end the day, the participants headed to the library. Their visit started on the first floor, where they registered and had their identities confirmed. After that, they explored an exhibition area featuring influential Islamic figures from the Nusantara, learning more about their legacy and impact. On the second floor, they dove deeper into the stories of Sunan Gresik, Sunan Ampel, and Sunan Bonang through engaging displays. Before wrapping up the visit, they joined an interactive activity where they learned to write their names and ages using the Arabic (Hijaiyah) alphabet. With guidance from Mr. Habib and several student assistants, they enjoyed the hands-on experience and proudly walked away having learned something new. The event ended with group photo session with library staffs and other participants.
