Java English Competition 2025: Culture in Motion, Language in Motion
Surabaya, October 25, 2025 – The annual Java English Competition (JEC) 2025 successfully took place at the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, Sunan Ampel State Islamic University (UINSA) Surabaya. Organized by the English Education Student Association (HMP PBI), this year’s JEC carried the inspiring theme “Language as a Bridge, Culture as a Guide: Empowering Indonesian Youth to Share Their Cultural Identity with the World.”
The day began early at 5:00 a.m. with a committee briefing and a joint prayer. All divisions immediately got to work, preparing the venue and equipment to ensure the FTK Building and Auditorium were ready for a day full of competitions and performances. By 6:30 a.m., the gates were opened, welcoming participants and invited guests. Contestants registered and received their competition kits, which included ID cards, numbers, and other essentials.
While waiting for the main event to begin, the committee played several videos, including the ELED Profile Video, the JEC jingle, and highlights from ICONELT 2024 and EAGER 2024. The atmosphere then became more lively with a banjari performance by the Student Talent (ST) HMP PBI team, followed by a welcoming dance that marked the entrance of invited guests into the auditorium.
At 7:50 a.m., the formal MCs, Nanda and Zifa, officially opened the event. The opening ceremony started with a Qur’anic recitation by Anindya, followed by the singing of the Indonesian national anthem and the UINSA hymn conducted by Syafiera. A series of speeches were then delivered by the Chair of JEC 2025, Zahratul Fitri; the Chair of HMP PBI, M. Muzakky Alhimam; the Head of the English Education Study Program, Ma’am Rakhmawati, M. Pd; and the Head of the Language Department, Mr. Dr. KH. Moh. Faizin, M.Pd.I. The ceremony continued with a prayer led by Mr. Fathurohman, M.Ag., and concluded with a symbolic ribbon-cutting by Mr. Faizin to officially mark the opening of JEC 2025.
After the ceremony, the formal MCs handed the stage over to the informal MCs, Mita and Nana, who guided participants to their respective competition venues. Three competitions were held simultaneously: Story Telling, Speech Contest, and English Olympiad. The Story Telling competition took place in the UINSA Auditorium, featuring talented participants from various schools presenting stories in English. The Speech Contest was held on the second floor of the FTK Building, divided into two categories — junior high in Room 213 and senior high in Room 212. Meanwhile, the English Olympiad took place in the FTK Language Lab on the third floor for both junior and senior high levels. Throughout the morning, the committee and MCs ensured everything ran smoothly, and participants were given a short break (ishoma) before the final rounds continued.
At 1:00 p.m., all participants and guests gathered back in the auditorium for the New Students’ Inauguration Performances presented by the Class of 2025. The show was filled with creativity and energy — from a Fashion Show titled “Vision Vanguard” by Golden Medal, a Traditional Dance “Wonder Legacy,” and a Musical Drama “Frozen Story,” to Hip Hop Dance “Drop Beat,” Acapella “Chillzone Crew,” Storytelling “Malin Kundang,” Choir “Lowkey Choir,” and a Javanese Folklore Drama “Whispers of the Sky.” The excitement reached its peak when the JEC 2025 committee surprised everyone with a flash mob performance, filling the auditorium with cheers and applause.
As the event came to its closing session, the formal MCs returned to announce the winners of each competition category. Certificates and awards were presented to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, as well as the runners-up of the Story Telling, Speech Contest, English Olympiad, and Essay Poster competitions. The whole event officially concluded at 3:50 p.m., ending with a cheerful group photo session — capturing smiles, pride, and satisfaction from everyone involved.
Through JEC 2025, HMP PBI UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya hopes to inspire the younger generation to continuously improve their English skills while embracing and sharing the richness of Indonesian culture with the world.
