Enhancing Gen-Z's Digital Literacy through Writing Day
Writing Day 2023 with the theme "The Existence of Youth in Digital Literacy 5.0" was held on Saturday, September 9th in the Faculty of Shariah and Law's building, UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya. Writing Day was the collaboration of two events; talkshow and writing contest. The opening session was handled by the master of ceremony, Alnaria Maulida Intan Safitri. The talk show was inviting Adi Yusuf Salsabilah (the founder of Literasi Teman Aksara and Literasi Cangkir Saya in Malang) and Husain Basyaiban (content creator and the founder of Tawazun.idn) moderated by Vega Putri Varisah (content creator and copywriter).
Literacy is neither only reading nor writing, but the way people observe the surrounding. Living along with gadgets, Gen-Z's are challenged to filter the content that they would interact with. Adi Yusuf mentioned that nowadays there is too much uneducated content in social media that could influence people's perspective and habits. In addition, Husain said that people will grow positively by implementing three keys; work hard, work smart, and be consistent. He claimed that forcing ourselves to do positive things for at least 5 minutes in 40 days, will change our life. The participants were enthusiastic that many of them wanted to ask questions to the guest stars, but the limitation of time held up could only manage to 4 participants' questions.
Finally, the winner of the writing contest that was already held via online, on May 26th - August 24th, was announced on the day of Writing Day after the performance of acoustic from Skill and Talent Division. It had four branches of competition; short story, poetry, comic, and cover design, followed by the university students in Indonesia. The event was sponsored by Wardah Beauty, Cheers Mineral Water, Ayam Geprek CipCip, and Manzara Tour & Travel. There were 163 participants joining on site and online. The existence of Writing Day with the astonishing guest stars, may enhance the participants' insight to be more wise in using the gadget. The stunning Writing Day was run successfully thanks to the chief of event, Azzahra Fitri Videyarani, and the committees of English Language Education Department Student Association.
